Transforming Pilates Instruction for Scoliosis: An Integrative, Holistic Approach to Client Success

In the field of Pilates, instructors face a unique challenge when working with clients who have scoliosis. Our clients, primarily adults, have established movement habits and postural tendencies that can be deeply ingrained, requiring a more comprehensive and integrative approach to achieve lasting change. As a Pilates Master Teacher and certified Schroth and Bowen therapist, I’ve designed a scoliosis course for Pilates instructors that blends foundational Pilates principles, the structural corrections of the Schroth method, and the latest insights into fascia and neurointegration. This combination offers a unique pathway for Pilates professionals to deepen their knowledge and increase their efficacy with scoliosis clients.

A Holistic Integration of Pilates, Schroth, and Fascia Knowledge

This course is distinct in its structure and philosophy. It goes beyond standard Pilates methodology by incorporating the Schroth method—a highly effective scoliosis correction approach that focuses on reshaping the spine’s curves through targeted exercises and breathing techniques. By integrating Schroth principles, instructors learn to support clients in a deeper and more precise manner, addressing the spinal asymmetries characteristic of scoliosis.

Understanding fascia’s role has also become essential in modern movement sciences. Fascia, the connective tissue network that influences posture, movement, and even emotions, is often overlooked in scoliosis treatment. However, recent advances emphasize its importance in achieving sustainable changes. This course emphasizes myofascial integration, inspired by pioneers like Thomas Myers, to empower Pilates instructors with a more comprehensive anatomical perspective.

Built on SOSORT Guidelines for Safe, Effective Programming

The safety and well-being of our clients are paramount. For this reason, the course follows the SOSORT (Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment) guidelines to provide evidence-based, safe, and effective programming for scoliosis. Instructors will gain an extensive theoretical foundation, enabling them to assess and apply the most effective scoliosis approaches available today.

Addressing the Challenges of Adult Habit Change with Neurointegration

Pilates instructors are accustomed to helping clients develop body awareness and alignment. However, when working with adult clients, we face a unique challenge: habits ingrained over years. Neurointegration, or the body’s ability to incorporate new movement patterns into its neural pathways, is crucial in helping clients make lasting postural changes. Our course integrates the latest understanding of neurointegration, providing instructors with tools and insights to support adult clients in making sustainable adjustments to their movement patterns.

Course Length and Prerequisites

This five-day course, including 32 hours of intensive theory and practice plus an additional day of advanced practice, is designed for instructors looking to expand their scoliosis expertise. To participate, instructors must have completed the “Working with the Spine” course and passed the exam with a minimum score of 75% to ensure foundational knowledge.

This course is truly comprehensive, designed for Pilates instructors who want to deepen their understanding and support their clients with scoliosis more effectively.
